Welcome parents! Here are a few frequently asked questions to help you and your daughter through the process.
Q: How will joining Sigma Kappa benefit my daughter?
A: Joining Sigma Kappa at SIU gives students a college family and a sense of having a “home away from home”. Involvement in Sorority Life provides a local and national support network for each student to be used for financial, emotional, scholastic, leadership and career development, and networking support.
Q: What is the parent or family role?
A: Take time to find out from your daughter what it means to her to be in Sigma Kappa. Be happy and supportive of her choice and keep in touch with her. Attend mom's weekend, dad's weekend, and family events put on by Sigma Kappa.
Q: What is the financial obligation?
A: Each sorority has different financial obligations, but the money goes to different programs the chapter puts on for their members, sisterhood events, alumni gatherings, traditional celebrations and more. Additional fees could be for initiation, t-shirts, and housing fees. The best way to know the cost is to talk to our Vice President of Finance, Dorothy Ingebrigtsen. She can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Q: What is the time commitment?
A: Becoming a part of Greek life does require some time but it's nothing our sisters can't handle! We have mandatory chapter meetings every week as well as a few mandatory events throughout the semester such as our Ultraviolet Gala and the Walk to End Alzheimers. These events are planned far in advance and members are given plenty of notice to fit them into their schedules.
Q: Is there an academic requirement?
A: All of our active members are required to maintain at least a 2.5 GPA. We as Sigma Kappas pride ourselves on our academic achievements and work very hard to maintain our grades, as well as helping our sisters maintain theirs. We have weekly monitored study hours at Morris Library to ensure that our members have the time they need to study and get support.
